Rector's Discretionary Fund
The Rector’s Discretionary Fund provides financial assistance to individuals and families in financial need. Our first priority is to help St. James members. Second, we provide financial assistance once a year to those in the community needing temporary financial help. Our Monday and Tuesday morning volunteers qualify those needing help by requesting 1. A bill, 2 a photo I.D. and 3 a food stamps card - all in the same name. Those who qualify receive a check made out to the service provider for up to $75.00 per year.
In 2018 we provided a total of $41,001. for 551 qualified Taos County residents, a new high. None of those helped were parish members. We also help them get relief through the HEAT New Mexico program.
Over the 11 years for which we have records the Rector’s Discretionary Fund has disbursed $266,759.32 on behalf of thousands of Taosenõs. The need is significant and ongoing, although fewer than ten percent of our recipients are beneficiaries for multiple years. The ongoing need reflects the fact that 22% of residents of Taos County are below the poverty line.
